Let's get the Golf Tournament Tee'd up
The Golf Tournament is coming up on Monday, June 9. Sponsors, prize donations and golfers are still welcome. Helpers also are needed to call potential sponsors and to work on the day of the tournament. This could be a good opportunity for any parents who have not yet fulfilled their PTO fundraising committee commitment to pitch in and avoid being assessed a surcharge. Anyone who would be willing to lend a hand should call Bill Brown at 781-331-6705.

A Note of Thanks
On behalf of the entire SJS family, the PTO Board would like to thank all of the folks who have worked so hard all year long to make St. Jerome School a wonderful place for our kids to learn and grow. This includes the faculty, committee chairpeople, hot lunch volunteers, Catholic Schools Week volunteers and so many, many others who give of their time, talent and treasures. A special thanks also goes out to outgoing PTO president Patty Joseph for her efforts this year. Thank you one and all!

Mary Quinn Honored by Nursing Honor Society at UMass

Retired Colonel Mary C. Quinn of our parish was recently honored by the U MASS Boston, College of Nursing local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, an international honor society of 300,000 registered nurses. At its annual induction ceremony on April 26, 2003, Mary was awarded the Heart of Nursing Award for her "love (caring), courage and honor" as manifested in her service to her country as a US Army nurse, highlighted by her battlefront tours of duty as a trauma nurse specialist in Korea and Vietnam.

This year's recipient of the Heart of Nursing Award at UMASS Boston, Mary Quinn, began her nursing career in 1945 on a maternity unit at Carney Hosptital in South Boston. Five years later, she joined the army and worked on a TB unit in Denver. Her next assignment was acute care/trauma nursing on a mash unit in the battlefields of South Korea.

Mary returned from Korea in 1952 and worked on neonatal intensive care units in San Francisco, Virginia, and Germany where she developed special skills in pediatric nursing.. She also worked at several hospitals on medical surgical units. She even managed to find time to get her Bachelor's Degree from the University of San Francisco in 1964 when relatively few nurses had a degree.

In 1968, Mary served as Chief Nurse in South Vietnam during the 1968 Tet Offensive when her hospital compound was struck eight times by rocket fire.

When she returned home from Vietnam, she continued in nursing administration as Chief Nurse at Fort Devens, and later in Germany. She ended her career at Fort Hood in Texas, the site of a recent homecoming celebration for the return of our POW's from Iraq. After 26 years in the US Army, she retired but she has kept active in nurses and veterans orgranizations. You should all check out the nurses' war memorial on Rt 3A in Weymouth near the church and the Korean War Memorial at Jackson Square in Weymouth. Mary had a lot to do with both of these memorials.

For those of us who know Mary Quinn, we stand in awe of her love, courage, and honor, along with her professional achievements as a nurse clinician and leader. But what really stands out about Mary is her sheer goodness, her humility, her faith, and her love for God and her parish community. . May God continue to bless her. We are so fortunate to have her in our parish where she remains very active. You will find her next weekend (Mother's Day) at the coffee and donuts after the 8 and 10 AM masses. She'll be working as usual and doing very little sipping, but she will take the time to chat with you in between checking the tables for drinks, food and supplies.
